Amenities Block – Main Rd - Eltham Lower Park - $250,000

ONLY in leafy Eltham could you say that a toilet block would offer aesthetic appeal.

But that is exactly what the colourful Lower Eltham Park creation delivers.

Designed by Trevor Weichmann and Associates and built by Billings Long, the block, comprising two buildings, has both practical and attention-grabbing features.

Its mix of colours and materials– timber, rendered brick and corrugated steel – has been designed to blend with the park’s picturesque green and treed surroundings.

Inside, apart from toilets and washbasins, the six separate unisex cubicles each have built-in folding benches to allow parents to change a baby’s nappy.

The tiled cubicles also offer a light, airy environment courtesy of a high ceilings. And, importantly, each cubicle is geared to allow for easy and convenient access for disabled people.

Billings Long’s director and co-founder, Damien Long, says it was crucial that the toilet block had good disabled access and amenities such as change tables given that the adjoining playground caters for families including disabled children.

But arguably the block’s major eye-catching features are on the outside – the bathing box-style coloured doors, the steel, wave-pattern roofline and the mosaic comprising insect artworks created by children from local schools and kindergartens.

Damiensays there is no doubt the colours attract the attention of visitors to the popular park.

“The colour palette helps the building to blend into the park and the different coloured doors create interest and some fun given it is associated with the playground behind it,’’ he says.“It has been well received by the Eltham community and works well.’’

Damien has a relatively straightforward explanation for the success of this building: “We do a lot of work around Eltham and that lends itself to this type of selection of materials.’’
